While he is not racing at Lake County Speedway this Saturday, he is one of the top drivers in the series out West. Ricky Bowers was born in Euclid and has spent most of his life in Lake County. That all changed in 2010 when he was given the opportunity to drive for Ron Sutton’s Winner’s Circle NASCAR Development program in California. That is when Bowers dreams of becoming a NASCAR driver started to become a reality.
His racing career started when he was ten years old. He began racing karts locally at Thompson Kart Raceway in Thompson, Ohio and Barberton Speedway, now known as Barberton Raceway Park, in Norton, Ohio. In 2006 he was crowned the Rookie Alcohol division champion and the following season he was finished runner-up in the Junior Alcohol division. From there he moved to the Great Lakes Sprint Series, racing karts around Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, and Illinois. After a successful run, that included a second and third in two separate points standings, he was selected to join Ron Sutton out west in his NASCAR development program.
Bower’s is in his second season of racing a USAC Ignite midget, previously known as the Ford Focus midgets. Last season he tallied 11 top five finishes in 14 starts and finished second in only his second feature start. In each event he entered last season he was a top five qualifier. This was a success season for a driver new to his surroundings and racing at multiple tracks for the first time.
This season he is well on his way to having another successful season. Piloting the number 42 machine for Ron Sutton, he has seven top five finishes in eight starts. Included are four second place finishes. As of July 14th he ranks second in the Northern Pavement points standings for the Western USAC Ignite midgets.
Bowers will be on hand for the USAC Ignite race at Lake County Speedway this Saturday. He will be signing autographs with the other drivers during the pursuit races and will pace the field in the ride along truck prior to the 40 lap feature race.
